Elder Gérald Caussé

The Message

Elder Caussé taught that a testimony of Jesus Christ is a personal gift from God. It grows through faith, seeking, living the gospel, and the influence of the Holy Ghost. Our testimonies may be different from those of other people even members of our own families and that is all right. We should trust and nurture the testimony we have.

He also taught that testimony is a gift meant to be shared. It doesn’t need to be long or impressive. A few sincere words of faith, expressed with humility and love, can strengthen our own testimony and touch someone else’s life.

Start the Conversation

Read the summary of the message and the Try This at Home ideas with your family. Then say: “Let’s choose one way we can recognize, strengthen, or share our testimonies this week.”

Try This at Home

Choose one idea your family would like to try this week or choose your own.

Two Sentences Are Enough
Elder Caussé told about his niece who simply said, “I know that God loves me” and “I know that God has a plan for me.” Have each person think of two simple sentences describing something they believe or know about Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, or the gospel. No speeches required.

Finish the Sentence
At dinner, in the car, or during family time, take turns finishing just one sentence: “I believe…” “I know…” “I have felt…” or “I am grateful that…” Family members can pass if they aren’t ready to share.

Remember Who Told You
Elder Caussé told how Alma remembered his father’s testimony of Jesus Christ when he desperately needed hope. Talk about someone whose testimony has stayed with you. What did that person say or do that you still remember?

Let “I Love You” Testify
Elder Caussé taught that testimony and love are deeply connected. Choose one person this week and show Christlike love in a simple, deliberate way. Afterwards, consider what your action may have communicated about what you believe.

Listen for an Opportunity
Instead of deciding beforehand whom you will talk to, simply pay attention this week. If a natural opportunity arises to say something such as “I love the Savior,” “I believe God helped me,” or “The gospel brings me peace,” don’t talk yourself out of saying it.

Find It in the Scriptures
Read Mosiah 18:9, which Elder Caussé used when teaching that disciples covenant to “stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places.” Ask: What could being a witness of Jesus Christ look like in our every day life?

Choose Your Own
Choose another part of Elder Caussé’s message that your family would like to live together this week.

Make a Plan
Once you’ve chosen an idea, decide when or where you’ll try it. For example: “We’ll do the two-sentence activity at dinner Thursday,” or “We’ll talk about someone whose testimony influenced us on the drive to church.

Check Back In

At the end of the week, talk as a family about what you noticed. What was easy? What felt uncomfortable? Did sharing something you believe affect your own testimony? Did someone else’s words affect you? What did you learn about one another? Did your experience help you understand why Elder Caussé called testimony a gift—both to receive and to share?

No grading. No guilt. Just notice what happened.
